2017 Petit Sirah “Brohaugh Vineyard” El Pomar ~ Paso RoblesRagtag Wine Co.
Blueberry, blackberry, clove, licorice, spiced cherries, tobacco, boysenberry pie, pumpkin pie. Medium bodied with a slightly tart, spicy finish.
ABOUT THE VINEYARD: Our Petite Sirah was grown at Brohaugh Vineyard on a 20% slope of Nacimiento-Los Osos Complex soil. The vines produce dark, dense and heavy clusters of Petite Sirah. A VSP (vertical shoot positioned) trellis provides good ventilation and optimal sunlight penetration to grow dark fruit without allowing mold or bunch rot.
GROWING SEASON: Spring was mild and wet followed by a period of warm and humid weather resulting in sporadic downy mildew. Warm weather coupled with heavy rains created vigorous growth and more clusters per vine. A heat spike pushed harvest ahead of schedule but fruit showed great intensity, lower brix levels and higher acids than normal.
WINEMAKING: We gave the Petite Sirah a longer five-day cold soak keeping the must below 40 degrees to inhibit native yeast growth and allowing a longer skin contact. A secondary malolactic fermentation helped soften the palate and lower acidity. We used extended-toast, profile 61 barrels, that integrate well with fruit-focused wines.
