Alcman is a reserve Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley, named after the 7th century BCE Greek lyric poet
His songs were composed in the Doric dialect of Sparta - not known for its beauty – which matches this Pinot giving us a rustic, old-world charm.
The palate is packed with earth and spice notes, accented by hints of red and black fruit. Spiced-game, lilac, and black pepper, with a lingering grainy-tannin finish that screams for food. Now with 6yrs on it, the Pinot is perfectly situated to reflect how the Russian River can be so diverse.
Melissa Siebert founded Ancient Oak to celebrate a Pinot Noir vineyard that her husband Ken's grandparents planted, and Melissa and Ken raised their kids on -- marking four generations on the land. The eponymous ancient oak presides over this vineyard. Winemaker Greg La Follette employs the same small-batch, hands-on, native-fermentation approach that he began as André Tchelistcheff's last pupil and developed and implemented as the founding winemaker of Flowers and Tandem.
